Based on the Decree of the Rector of ISI Yogyakarta Number 2874/PT.44/UM.00.19/1985 dated April 20, 1985, ISI Yogyakarta has an emblem with a harmonious combination of the motifs of Dewi Saraswati, a Swan, and a Lotus Flower, depicted linearly within a basic circular form. The emblem is the creation of two lecturers from the Faculty of Fine Arts, namely Drs. Subroto Sm., M.Hum., and the late Drs. Parsuki.
Saraswati
At the core of the emblem is the goddess of knowledge and the arts, in accordance with the Institute's aim to shape artists with scientific attitudes and competencies. As the goddess associated with knowledge and the arts, Dewi Saraswati carries in each of her hands:
- Palm leaf manuscript As a symbol of knowledge, the library is an extremely important source of knowledge for every person who wishes to pursue knowledge.

The Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta places the nation's art and culture at the center of inspiration and activities. - Prayer beads or rosary, representing the infinity of knowledge that humans can pursue according to the philosophy of lifelong learning.
- Lotus flower represents purity, a condition that the Institute desires to be a guide for every member in all their actions.

Pictured crowned with five petals, two in the back and three in the front, which signifies July 23rd as the founding date of ISI Yogyakarta. This Dewi Saraswati is depicted standing upright with her face looking forward, which implies that every citizen is always ready and vigilant in facing the future.
Goose
is the mount of Dewi Saraswati, which is interpreted as a symbol of wisdom, a quality expected of every institute member. In this symbol, the swan is depicted as follows:
- Wing is a symbol of Pancasila because the feathers on each wing number five. Both wings expand symmetrically to the right and left, meaning that with Pancasila, the institute's citizens continuously develop in a balanced and harmonious manner between physical and spiritual, science and art, as well as personal and with their service to society and the state.
- Head The slightly upturned and rightward-looking aspect symbolizes the will of the entire academic community to always side with truth and virtue, and thus possess the quality of being brave because they are right.
- Prayer beads or rosary, representing the infinity of knowledge that humans can pursue according to the philosophy of lifelong learning.
- Lotus flower The large, three-lobed crown symbolizes Saraswati's halo surrounding her, meaning the institute practices the Tridharma of higher education based on purity and nobility. The three petals of the flower and Saraswati's four hands symbolize the number seven, representing the seventh month (July), the birth month of ISI Yogyakarta.
