ISI Graduate Students Care for "Pekbung" Music

PekbungWebRRI-Jogja News/L-09, the first batch of students of the Master of Arts Management (MTS) ISI Yogyakarta who are so enthusiastic about building the image of the Study Program by realizing the subjects through the Community Service program, held Pekbung art assistance in Wijirejo Village, Pandak District, Bantul, from January 2 to January 20, 2013.

Assistance by providing provisions on internal and external arts management. Internally related to musical management, while externally related to how to establish relationships with the media and publication strategies.

According to Novena, a 2011 MTS student who concentrates in Cultural Arts Management, as an academic it is good that the knowledge gained on campus can help with artistic problems in the community, in this case traditional arts owned by local communities in order to raise the potential of the village, in addition to being a tourism asset that has an impact on the economy of the local community.

The opening of the mentoring program was held on Wednesday evening, (02/01/13) at the Wijirejo Village Hall, Pandak, Bantul, under the theme Pekbung Semangat Indonesia, directly involving pekbung artists in Wijirejo Village.

From the results of the observation, there were three pekbung art groups in the village. At that time, several student music communities performed, including PATROL Community (Jember Student Association Yogyakarta), Pecel Phencuk Community (a group of students from Banyuwangi), HMJ Ethnomusicology from ISI Yogyakarta, and Djembe Sewon (percussion community Sewon, Bantul). With the hope that through these performances there will be mutual inspiration.

The pekbung art group that night presented five songs with two singers. The collaboration of the three pekbung groups received a rousing response from the audience, warming up the chilly night as the rain continued to fall.

Djembe Sewon group, HMJ Ethnomusicology group and Patrol group warmed up the atmosphere. Meanwhile, the discussion of recognizing and knowing the obstacles faced by Pekbung art actors was lively.

The lack of local government attention to Pekbung art does not dampen the enthusiasm of the musicians to keep practicing and working, so that they can come up with more interesting musical ideas such as Pekbung Jazz, said Deny, a musician from Djembe Sewon.

Stevi, an exchange student at ISI Yogyakarta from Germany, who attended the workshop, said that he was very appreciative of Pekbung art, because this Indonesian art has its own uniqueness with the interaction built with the audience.
