Kemristekdikti Launches Scholarship Scheme for Lecturers and Outstanding Graduates

Jakarta (May 6) - The quality and competence of lecturers will determine the output of graduates as well as the reputation of a university. To date, there are 34,933 lecturers in Indonesia who still have S-1 qualifications. Meanwhile, the number of professors is still at 5,389 people. In fact, ideally, Indonesia needs 22,000 professors.
The Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Kemristekdikti), through the Directorate of Science and Technology Human Resources (SDID), is committed to increasing the number of competitive educators or lecturers and scientists in the future. This is achieved through a number of postgraduate scholarship schemes (Master's and Doctoral), both at domestic and foreign universities.
Three scholarships were launched, namely the Domestic Postgraduate Education Scholarship (BPP-DN), the Affirmation Scholarship for New State Universities (PTNB), and the Master's to Doctoral Education Program Scholarship for Outstanding Undergraduates (PMDSU). The quotas provided are 1,000 recipients for BPP-DN, 150 recipients for the PTNB Affirmation Scholarship, and 250 PMDSU scholarships.
“Until 2021, more than 6,000 lecturers will retire. Therefore, this scholarship is a breakthrough to increase the capacity of lecturers and produce higher education science and technology resources from excellent scholars,” said the Director General of Higher Education Science and Technology Resources, Ali Ghufron Mukti, at a press conference on Monday (5/6).
Ghufron explained that S-2 scholarships for permanent lecturers with NIDN or NUPN are provided through the PTNB Affirmation scholarship scheme. Meanwhile, BPP-DN is given to lecturers within the scope of Kemristekdikti to pursue doctoral degrees. Not only that, scholarships for lecturers to study abroad are also available, namely through the Dikti Funded Fulbright scheme to the United States (US) for 50 recipients, OeAD with Austria for 10 recipients, and Newton Fund with the United Kingdom for eight recipients.
“For the three domestic scholarships, namely BPP-DN, Affirmation Scholarship, and PMDSU, registration has opened from June 5 to June 30, 2017,” he said.
Specifically for the PMDSU scholarship, Ghufron added, it will be given to qualified fresh graduates who wish to become a doctor with a four-year period of education. In this program, the excellent graduates are required to produce at least two research publications in international journals.
“The PMDSU scholarship funding facility includes research grants for students of Rp50-60 million per year and guidance for writing international publications. For supervisors, they will be facilitated with the PMDSU SAME collaboration to overseas universities or institutions,” he asserted.
