Goat: Saras' Vehicle to a Young Doctor

Goat: Saras' Vehicle to a Young Doctor

Young, progressive, and chooses to refuse to distance herself from reality is a brief description of Sarasati Windria. A final year student of the Department of Veterinary Science, Doctoral Program, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta.

Before continuing her studies to a higher level. Saras first completed her Veterinarian professional education studies at Airlangga University, Surabaya. Having experience and high skills in her field, as well as graduating with satisfactory results, did not necessarily make this 28-year-old woman tempted by the glittering world of work.

His passion, dedication and high sense of scientific responsibility have led him to continue his doctoral studies through the Master to Doctoral Program for Excellent Scholars (PMDSU), led by the Directorate General of Science, Technology and Higher Education Resources, Kemenristekdikti.

As someone who fully understands the animal world and the wide open research fields in the world of Veterinary Science, it does not make Saras forget the condition of the farms in the surrounding environment. This can be seen from her dissertation research topic on 'Diagnosis of Mastitis in Goats'. A disease that is very detrimental to farm animals, because it can reduce or affect the quality and quantity of milk production in livestock such as goats and cows.

Her interest in goats is the main reason why she continues her studies at the university level. In addition, he also explained that goats are indigenous to Indonesia. For this reason, he vowed to faithfully conduct research on goats.

Saras' own research focuses on the PE or peranakan etawa goat species (the result of a marriage between Indian jamnapari goats and local Indonesian goats). This species of goat is known to be large in stature and capable of producing goat's milk for human consumption.

Even when she got an offer from her promoter, Prof. Siti Isrina Oktavia Salasia, to conduct advanced research on cross species bacteria at Hirosima University in Japan in the Sandwich program from Kemenristekdikti. Saras chose to conduct research on the character of staphilococcus aureus bacteria that is useful for early detection of mastitis in goats in Japan.

After returning from Japan, his research collaboration with Prof. Motoyuki Sugai at Hirosima University did not stop. The research collaboration that had previously been carried out continues to this day. During her time in Japan, Saras claimed to have gained a lot of valuable experience, especially in research work carried out independently. In addition, her activities while there, which were constantly struggling with theory and laboratories, also contributed to Saras' discipline.

"There are many important things to learn in Japan, especially the most important thing is the research culture," he said.

Saras' future target is to produce a new theory on the diagnosis of mastitis in goats. She considers this to be an urgency for her. Because the impact of the disease is very detrimental.

Prior to this level, Saras's dream of reaching the highest academic level had been dashed due to economic factors. However, social conditions and her high hopes to build a better life in her neighborhood eventually triggered her to continue her studies to a higher level.

"Through this PMDSU, after meeting great people in various programs such as Sandwich, I finally came to know that the scientific world out there has moved very fast while I am still nothing," he said.

To date, during her doctoral studies, Saras has successfully published Scopus indexed international scientific journals: "Identification of Staphylococcus aureus and Coagulase Negative Staphylococci Isolates from Mastitis Milk of Etawa Crossbred Goat" (published in Research Journal of Microbiology); and "Antibiotic Resistance and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Bovine, Crossbred Etawa Goat and Human" (published in Asian Journal of Animal and Veterinary Advances).

An achievement that, given the background Saras grew up in, would be hard to believe. The goat that she had always considered as an ordinary farm animal that passed around the house. In fact, it is now a vehicle for her to become a young Doctor.

Through this PMDSU Program, Saras hopes that in the future Indonesia can continue to advance and further develop its wings in the international scientific world, especially in the fields of education, science and technology. (indri)
