ArtJog 2015

It is rumored that one of the paintings displayed indoors at the international art exhibition ArtJog 2015, held at the Yogyakarta Cultural Park, was sold for four billion Rupiah to a collector from China.

At this year's ArtJog, painter I Nyoman Masriadi is exhibiting his latest work titled “SHANGRI-LA”. The acrylic painting on canvas measures 150 X 200 centimeters. The painting features a physically perfect man, muscular with a joyful face, who appears to be fantasizing beyond the real world.

The presence of the legend of “Shangri-La’ adds depth to the work's meaning, perhaps it is a mythical place, a paradise without problems, or a harmonious utopia where love is boundless.

“The unique location ”Shangri-La," a mysterious symbol in the painting, enhances the man's fantasy, making it more surreal and powerful. The presence of many bubbles brings each part of the dream back to reality. True happiness depends entirely on how we interpret life.

Here is a collection of texts that accompany the paintings of I Nyoman Masriadi, whose name is renowned at Christie's Auction House in both Hong Kong and Singapore.

Many collectors worldwide hunt for his works, adding to Yogyakarta's reputation, considering The Painter, an ISI Yogyakarta graduate, still chose Jogja as his place of residence.

ArtJog 2015 was marked by a giant spherical dome installation, 12 meters high, made from intertwined wire mesh wrapped with a variety of local plants scientifically known as Cuphea Hyssopifolia, a type of hedging plant. The sphere was named “Green Flux”.

On the south side of the giant ball created by Indieguerillas, there is an entrance with a ticket, and visitors are asked to leave their backpacks at the special luggage storage locker.

This is intended to anticipate the touching of the artworks, which are mostly very delicate and prone to damage if touched. For this reason, the committee also prepared many volunteers to guard the 86 works on display.

Inside the sphere is the “Wish-Tree,” a creation of world-renowned celebrity Yoko Ono, wife of John Lennon, the legend from The Beatles.

Through the work “Tree of Hope,” Yoko Ono invites ArtJog visitors to write their hopes on pieces of paper and then hang them on the tree. It is a movement of collective prayer, uniting many energies to realize better hopes.

ArtJog coordinator, Bambang “Toko” Witjaksono, revealed that the specialty of this year's event was the collaboration between artists and technical experts, including electrical engineering, computer programming, and architects, resulting in unique artworks in new formats that have never existed before.

In this 8th ArtJog, visitors are invited to participate in interesting and exciting events such as Curatorial Tours, viewing works accompanied by curators, then Meet The Artists to understand artists“ creative concepts, as well as Public Screening events, screening films about Fluxus, an art movement in the 60s that inspired the theme of ArtJog 8, ”Infinity In Flux".  KBRN-Yogyakarta
